Mark Howells – Assistant Manager, Swansea Office

Your qualifications
I studied towards 3 A-Levels, being Math, Physics and Computing at Gorseinon College before joining James & Uzzell in September 2003 when I was 18. I completed my exams and became a member of ACCA in February 2008.
Why did you choose to join Griffith & Miles/Broomfield & Alexander?
At James & Uzzell I gained valuable experience in Tax and Accounts; however I required a new challenge to further enhance my skill set. I joined Griffith & Miles for the opportunity of working with a larger firm and to move into and gain experience of Auditing.
What sort of responsibility do you have?
I am responsible for leading audits for a various range of clients, with turnovers ranging from £5m to over £100m. As well as auditing medium to large companies, I am responsible for preparing and finalising accounts for a wide range of small companies and businesses. I supervise and provide guidance, assistance and training to other members of staff.
What is the most exciting thing about being part of a growing firm?
Everyday has the potential to offer a new challenge. There is greater opportunity to offer more value and service to new and existing clients while further securing and enhancing your own career.
A good day is when …?
...You are thanked by clients for taking the time in providing them with valuable assistance and help, whether it is a complex issue or a simple book keeping query.
Do you have any advice or words of wisdom for graduates joining the firm?
Don't stress or worry too much over not understanding certain topics in the exams, obtaining experience and knowledge whilst carrying out the job is what will provide to be most valuable and everything else will just fall into place.

Why did you choose to join Broomfield & Alexander?
I wanted to join a growing firm and Broomfield & Alexander are the largest independent firm in Wales. I felt that they would give me plenty of opportunities to train and complete my ACA exams.
What sort of responsibility do you have?
I am part of the 3 strong Business Services management team in the Cardiff Office. I have a portfolio of over 110 clients including sole traders, partnerships and Limited Companies; I also look after the solicitor's portfolio for Cardiff which includes The Solicitors Accounting Rules audit as well as the annual accounts.
What is the most exciting thing about being part of a growing firm?
There are some really good opportunities to work with a variety of different clients.

Everything goes to plan!
A bad day is when …?
No such thing!
Do you have any advice or words of wisdom for graduates joining the firm?
Study for your exams and pass first time. Its saves a lot of stress and time in the long run!

The likelihood of being able to take on significant responsibility in the near future.

You have work at a new client, you never know what to expect.
A bad day is when… ?
There is a lot of admin to do.
Do you have any advice or words of wisdom for graduates joining the firm?
Don't be afraid to ask for help. University is a totally different environment to working in an Accountancy firm; they won't expect you to know everything.

Why did you choose to join Broomfield & Alexander?
One of the main reasons why I decided to join Broomfield Alexander is due to the company being an Investor in people. Their approach to development of their employees will allow me to ensure I am able to develop to my full potential within the Accountancy profession.
What sort of responsibility do you have?
I am responsible for the production of financial accounts, and the preparation of Audit files within the firm.
What is the most exciting thing about being part of a growing firm?
It allows me have experience in dealing with a wide range of clients, and develop my expertise in the audit and accountancy profession.
A good day is when …?
I am able to help our clients with the development of their company and ensure that they are presented with valuable, accurate financial information, to make correct decisions for their business.
A bad day is when …?
I get stuck in traffic on the M4 to work!

Lynda Kendall – Tax Manager

Your qualifications…
First class honours degree in Chemistry from Bristol University. Member of ICAEW.
Why did you choose to join Broomfield & Alexander?
Because it seemed like a really professional operation with close client relationships – a firm that does seem to care about its clients and staff.
What sort of responsibility do you have?
I manage the corporation tax department. This involves ensuring clients compliance work is carried out within set time limits, ensuring clients are made aware of relevant tax planning opportunities, ensuring required tax information is available to time for other Broomfield & Alexander departments and ensuing the team members remain happy and motivated.
What is the most exciting thing about being part of a growing firm?
Not ever really knowing what work or challenges will land on your desk each day!
A good day is when …?
The sun shines and interesting problems are solved with positive results – happy clients and a happy team!
A bad day is when …?
Lack of time or information leading to frustration – unhappy clients or an unhappy team!
Do you have any advice or words of wisdom for graduates joining the firm?
If you don’t know the answer then research the point and ask if necessary – ensure you always understand the clients, the information and the detail.

Why did you choose to join Broomfield & Alexander?
Having previously worked for a large accountancy practice, I wanted to work for a smaller firm where hard work would be recognised and to be valued as a member of the team. From my first interview Broomfield & Alexander seemed like the perfect choice. They had a very personal approach and everyone was very friendly.
What sort of responsibility do you have?
My job is to prepare both personal and corporation tax returns as well as giving ad-hoc advice. This involves liaising with clients and colleagues on the most tax efficient approach, ensuring we save the client as much tax as possible.
What is the most exciting thing about being part of a growing firm?
Everyone in the office is enthusiastic. It is exciting being part of a team with a target and ambition.
A good day is when …?
Letting my clients know they are due a refund of tax!
A bad day is when …?
… I get stuck in traffic.
Do you have any advice or words of wisdom for people joining the firm?
Ensure you put a lot of effort into your exams, they are tough but achievable. It’s equally as important to give yourself time away from the books, so when you do, don’t feel bad about it!!
