Lack of funding holds back 1 in 4 SMEs

Difficulty accessing funding is causing around one in four small and medium-sized firms to miss out on business opportunities, research shows.

A survey by Aldermore of 1,004 senior decision-makers in SMEs revealed that 23% had missed out on at least one new business opportunity due to lack of funding in the past 12 months.

The issue shows no signs of improvement, with 4% more businesses reporting this problem since the same survey was conducted in 2017. (more…)

Welsh Government Economic Action Plan

The Welsh Government this week published a new Economic Action Plan for consultation which sets out how financial support is going to be delivered to businesses in Wales over the next 10 years.

One of the key changes set out in the plan is that in return for financial support there will be an expectation that businesses will enter into an economic contract with Welsh Government to assist with delivering the wider objectives of the economic strategy in Wales. (more…)

EU funding boost for Wales Tourism

It has been announced that more than £24 million will be available for the development and marketing of tourism through the Welsh Government Rural Communities – Rural Development Programme 2014-2020, which is funded by the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development and Welsh Government. Two EU backed property development funds set to create £40m infrastructure boost for West Wales and the Valleys

Applications now open for the Welsh Enterprise Zone Business Rates Scheme

A targeted round of the Enterprise Zone Business Rates Scheme is now available to businesses within the eight Welsh Enterprise Zones which could deliver significant reductions to their annual business rates payments for 2016-17.

The scheme focuses on small and medium sized enterprises that are demonstrating business growth, new starts or businesses that are increasing the size of their full time workforce. (more…)

Grants Update

The MHA Broomfield Alexander grants team has had another busy year.  During 2016 we assisted clients with securing approximately £3 million of grant funding mainly for projects that involve capital expenditure and job creation/safeguarding but also for Research and Development projects.

With record levels of inward investment, including high profile investments by Aston Martin and TVR, an improving economy, lower unemployment rates and increasing budgetary pressures, the Welsh Government is becoming much more selective in relation to the types of project it will support and the amount of grant funding it will make available. In addition, there is now more of a drive towards repayable grant funding than there has been previously.

Around £40m available for research and innovation proposals

Mike FenwickAround £40m of EU funds are available in a call for innovative proposals that can successfully translate research and innovation into new and improved commercial products, processes and services.

Project proposals should build on areas where Welsh businesses and research organisations have already established, or are beginning to establish, internationally significant expertise, with a strong industrial pull.

New £4m fund to invest in Wales’ social business sector

Mike FenwickThe new Social Business Growth Fund, backed by £2.3m of EU funds, will make funding packages of up to £150,000 available to social businesses across Wales.

Managed by the Wales Council for Voluntary Action (WCVA), it will support the growth of Welsh social businesses and help develop new products, services and markets.

Investments through the fund will involve a mix of grant funding and repayable finance, with financial incentives for social businesses that exceed job creation targets.

New Welsh Government Grant Fund

Mike FenwickThe Welsh Government has launched a new £5 million Growth and Prosperity Fund to support SME’s in Wales. The fund is a non repayable grant fund to support capital investment and job creation/safeguarding.

The new fund is split into two phases with £2 million allocated for smaller projects with grants ranging from £5,000 to £50,000 (Phase 1) and £3 million allocated for larger capital investment projects with grants ranging from £50,000 to £500,000 (Phase 2). Phase 1 for smaller projects is now open for applications which must be submitted by 30 January 2017 at the latest. Companies are required to have completed the project by 31 March 2017.

Welsh Government SME Growth Fund

Mike FenwickThe Welsh Government has announced £5 million of funding to support SMEs in Wales to create and safeguard jobs.

The fund will support Welsh businesses looking to grow and increase the number and scale of companies that are exporting. Supporting and promoting Wales with potential inward investors will also be a priority.

The first element of the fund will be available between September 2016 and March 2017. Eligible costs are capital costs. Applications must be completed and received by the 30 January, 2017 and clients must have purchased and paid for the asset in full by 31 March, 2017.

The second pot of funding will be delivered between 2017/18 (further information about this fund will follow).

Companies will receive up to 50% match funding between £5,000 and £50,000 with this being the maximum amount of support.
